Emmy hadnât even finished half her drink when Leo drained his glass and made moves to leave. Evie wasnât far behind him, and Emmy found herself alone at the table, swirling the second half of her wine in her glass. She watched as the room continued to buzz with life. Laughter rang out, glasses clinked, and the warm, inviting scent of pub food wafted through the air. She tried not to feel lonely and as if she was the only one in the place with no one to talk to. She wished Amy was with her, having a laugh.
She took one look at the clock above the bar and sighed. It was too late to even think about cooking, and she really didnât fancy another microwave meal. She tried to convince herself that was why she was happy to stay in the pub on her own just because she didnât want to cook. It wasnât the only reason. It might have been because there was a certain blue-eyed neighbour who had piqued her interest and was standing not too far away. She reckoned if she ordered another drink and some food, she might just bump into him again. Shame that.
Making up her mind that even without the delightful chance of bumping into Tom, she really couldnât be bothered to go home and cook and gathering resolve and her glass, she approached the bar and ordered a steak pie. Feeling a bit less conspicuous than she had sitting at the table, she took a seat on a barstool tucked right up at the end of the bar. It just so happened that the end of the bar was not far away from where Tom was standing, talking to a couple of friends.
Emmy sipped her wine, made out she was very interested in the screen of her phone and watched Tom from the corner of her eye. His demeanour, confidence, and odd air of mystery blew Emmy away. As if sensing her gaze, even though she was trying not to look at him, Tomâs eyes flicked along the bar; he gave her a small nod and a bit of a smile. Emmy returned the nod and quickly looked back down at her phone. She chuckled to herself. What was she doing? She was well used to having dinner on her own; sheâd done it enough times, especially now Callum was getting older, but this dinner for one was a tad more interesting than usual. It appeared that Emmy was indeed, as Leo had intimated, on a new adventure. An adventure that made her fizz. She was now nuclear. She could not and would not argue with that.
Just at the same moment as Emmyâs pie arrived, Tom stepped over towards the bar to order some drinks. âLooks nice,â he said, nodding to Emmyâs plate.
âYep, I couldnât face another ready meal. You know what itâs like when you move.â
âAll getting a bit much, is it?â
âJust a bit.â Emmy laughed.
Tom glanced at the pie, then back at Emmy, and inclined his chin towards the wine fridge.
